I am a mommy who by all accounts is "normal".  You would never peg me for a huffer, however, looks are deceiving.  I started noticing something peculiar when I started to clean my windows one day with window cleaner.  I had noticed that the smell was pleasant, but it didn't go any further.  Then when I went to put it up later that day I noticed that I wanted to get another whiff of the ammonia smell it had.  So, I popped the top off and sniffed it a few times and put it away.  Well, by the next day I wanted it again.  Then the next day I wanted more.  Then I went to the grocery store and saw that the ammonia was on sale for a huge jug and I BOUGHT IT!  I brought it home and have been sniffing it several times a day.  It gets to where my mouth waters for it.  I have opened my mouth to inhale it directly through my mouth instead of getting it through the nose.  Seems it lasts longer when I do it that way.  I have never had an addiction to anything before and now that this has come upon me I find myself ashamed.  As I write this my mouth is watering for that jug.  I have my different ways of getting my hit....depending on my time before anyone comes into the kitchen.  Sometimes I just give the jug a shake and sniff the cap real fast if I know my daughter might be coming or if she is at school and I have plenty of time I can do the mouth thing.  I never drink it or anything like that.  I also love the smell of certain metallic smells and used to love the smell of paint until this new way of making latex paint ruined that!  Rubber cement, gasoline, the corrosive room at Epcot Test Track ride!!!!!!  hahahhah..... I love it.... I will ride the ride over and over just to go through that room!  I just would like to know if there are others out there like me who have a strange obession with common household products.  Am I crazy?????

No, you are not crazy, but you need to realize you have a serious problem and need to seek some help for it. You also need to realize you are harming your body EVERY SINGLE TIME you inhale ANY chemical. There are so many people on the board here that are going through the same thing you are that you can relate to and talk with, but you need to get help for YOU and for your family. I think it's great you came to the boards and are seeking information about your problem - that's a start!! I really hope you do decide to get some medical help though and end this problem because you are doing more damage than you realize.

Best of luck to you and know you can always come to the boards for support and encouragement. That is what we are here for!

You are not crazy, you have an unresolved issue.  Various things such as smells give you instant pleasure, a way to hide the hidden pain inside.  Hopefully you are ready for help, I think you are or you would not have posted your issue.  You shouldn't be ashamed, you have an issue that needs resolving.  We all have something, I believe.  I have been through similar instant gratification addictions.  It is a lonely place; you and your secret. I received help through prayer. I promise you can too.  When you are ready, hopefully soon, and if you are willing, just pray.  Ask for help, put your life in God's hands, tell Him all of things you feel badly about, say them audibly, and ask, with believing in you heart to overcome your addictions, for help, and believe, and see yourself as a healed you, really see yourself healed and I promise, you will receive God's help.  It will come in many forms, you may not realize it when it comes, but one day you will realize you crave less and less, you are hopeful, you are focused on other important things such as giving to your family.

If you can't see yourself praying, it is an option that is ALWAYS with you.  You should also speak to a professional who will give you tools to help you stop temptation before it over-takes you.

I feel very hopeful for you, I see you as healed and happy.  I know you can see that you too if you try.  You will overcome your addiction, I believe, I see it.

Thanks so much for the posts.  I am going to pray about it tonight when I have time to sit down by myself after everyone has gone to bed and really pray about it.  My question is why does things like this take hold of some people?  Again thank you for help in realizing I am not in this fight alone.

lv2huf,

I'm not sure what makes certain people start using in the first place. I will never know why my fiance' Jarod did...and that's really hard. He died back in June from inhaling computer duster.

I'm glad you realize you need help. Best of luck to you! Please keep us posted on your progress...

LV2,

I thought of you all weekend.  I hope you found time to pray, I prayed for you.  I really believe you can move-on past this, you need to believe too.

Be strong, know I am thinking positive for you, and believe in you and the universe, and mostly God.

Be well,

I did pray, but still have the urge to grab the bottle to sniff.  Once that bottle is gone I will be free of this burden.  Until then I am compelled to keep my ammonia in my pantry for my urges.  That doesn't mean that I am not going to continue to pray about it.  I still would appreciate any prayers cause I know it will take God to help me out of this mess.  I have not even cracked the bottle today and I have been up since 6:30 AM.  That is definitely a good start!  Just knowing that bottle in there is kinda like a security blanket.... I cant part with it just yet.

Hello from server,

It does not matter it will take a bit of time.

I promise this....if you say I am ammonia free in fact I am free of all dependencies and if you fantasize about life being ammonia free, and say things like "I feel so good being ammonia free, I am so healthily, my mind is healthy, my body is healthy, etc"  you will become ammonia free.  When and how it happens I can not predict, I can simply promise you it will.

Create a statement that you like, it must be positive not "I do not want to be addicted" it must be positive "I am free..."

It will feel fake at first, really fake, but if you believe and if you live it in your mind, and if you keep it positive you will attract that which you asks for.

I promise.  Just take one second at a time, one minute, one hour, one day at a time.  You are cured, you are free I know you are and I am happy for you, I believe in you.

lv2huf- Thanks for your post. No, you're not crazy. Think server gave good advice about prayer and positive affirmations. Another good point server made is that you should seek professional help. Have you reached out to anyone yet?

Also, please take a moment to go to another thread on this message board to read Jarods_fiancee's full story. A lot of times inhalant abusers don't realize the effect their problem and in many cases death has on the people in their lives. Have you thought about the harm your causing to your body?  Have you thought about the example you are setting for your kids? What would you say to them if they start abusing?

Hopefully, one day you'll be able to tell them "I've been there, got help and am now much better. Inhalant abuse is dangerous and should be taken lightly." Please keep us posted and best of luck!

The truth is that the most fatalities caused by inhailants consists of first time users. I have done duster before, and the high is unique, but at the same time, it is extremely short. Sure, a lot of teens are getting high off of duster and mabye making the drinking age 18 would solve the problem, but the truth is that some humans, like myself, have an uncontrollable urge to escape from relaity for a short period of time.

In the fifth grade, I was prescribed to concerta. I stopped talking to everyone except my parents, so they put me on lexapro, which made things worse. Eventually i switched over to adderal and a few years later to vyvanse, but why i tried duster is because i heard about it on the news. Before then, I did not know that you could get high off of it. The old saying, "ignorance is bliss," should guide our policy for detering inhailant abuse. There will still be adolescence abusing the inhailants, but there will be far more middle class and  lower class kids that even know that stimulants can get you high.

My final comment is completely off topic, but it relates to my slow demise. I have had bipolar disorder since the fifth grade, and i started dipping in the sixth. Freshman year i began drinking. Sophmore yr i smoked pot and occasionally took pain killers. But my junior year, i was introduced to oxycontin. Inhailants can't even compete with the unending bliss that the green oc 80 gives you. Most people do not get addicted to inhailants and even if they do, they are usually anomalies to the general population. I am not trying to be disrespectful, but i am going to guess that 25 percent of people who try inhailants become addicts. Oxy is completely different. I loved crushing one up and staring at the pile of euphoria for a minute, knowing how high i was going to get. Then i lined it up and snorted the 80. I think it took about 15-30 minutes to kick in, but after that, an orgasmic sensation creeped across my body and lingered there for hours.

My main argument is that adolescence and adults will do whatever it takes to get high, but oxycontin will force a person who tends to not form addictions develops a need for the ultimate high. So many teenagers have died from ocs, and i was almost one of them.

lv2huf - Hoping that you're doing well.  If you haven't gotten outside professional help, please consider doing so as those who stop using drugs or alcohol by themselves who haven't worked a program are said to be a "dry drunk".  Someone who is sober but hasn't dealt with the issues that may have led him or her to use in the first place has a higher chance of relapse.

This site has a listing of counseling agencies:  http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/ and can click one's state of residence on the map and continue with the search.

johnbrowning - Thank you for sharing your story.  Hoping that you've gotten the proper treatment for the bipolar disorder as that may help you to not want to self-medicate by using any drugs including inhalants which are actual Poison.  The chemicals used in products used for huffing are both physically and psychologically addictive, and it's not unusual for a person to develop an addiction to huffing.

Please do get outside professional help for the drug use.  This site has some counseling and treatment (including detoxification for those who go through withdrawal from certain types of drugs) programs for those with a substance abuse problem, and some have a dual diagnosis program or MICA (mental illness chemical addiction) program for those with a mental health problem in addition to a drug/alcohol addiction (and some programs may have state and/or county funding for those without health insurance):  http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/ and can click one's state of residence on the map.

For a free 12-step Narcotics Anonymous meeting (and the only requirement is having a desire to get sober):  http://www.na.org

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings (and one may attend an "open" meeting if doesn't have a drinking problem):  http://www.aa.org

This site has some common mottos pertaining to those 12-step programs such as "One day at a time", "First things first" and "People, places and things":  http://www.royy.com/toolsofrecovery.html

Please take good care of yourself and make good, healthy choices in life.

I do the same thing, not only with ammonia but also with cleaning products, bleach, fingernail polish remover, and glass cleaner. I started a long time ago, i first smelt the ammonia and i liked it so whenever i seen it, like in the bathroom or something i would always crave it and end up sniffing it constantly. Some think its a problem like i'm doing a drug or something but i know how you feel, i just cant help it. I Love the smell of it. i try not to smell it because someone told me it kills the braincells but out of all of them ammonia is my favorite, i bite my tongue when i crave it, thats how i know when i want to smell it. So no your not alone. I felt the same way, i thought i was the only one who did this. So i looked it up and found this site; So THANK YOU i did need this i am 16 years old and don't know much about this. aha i just found out today that it was a real addiction ( thanks to Google : )

Again, not alone.  I used to lock myself in the bathroom when I was a kid and wipe and double wipe everything down in bleach, basking in the fumes. The major head aches put a stop to that. Please be carefull, the long term effects are not worth the short high. My prayers will be with you.
