Does anyone know what this stuff is/how it works? I picked up a can of air to dust out my computer and various electronics, and what do I find but NO ingredient list and "This product contains IQ's Bittergent technology to help deter misuse through intentional inhalation of concentrated vapors." I'm 18, (believe it or not) not interested in trying any drugs, etc. so I'm not worried much about "what is it going to do to me," unless it "works" while I'm dusting out my computer. I am interested as a student (currently in an AP chem class; interested in science/technology/engineering in general), and would like to know (if possible) what this actually is.

If it can't be answered on here, but someone has helpful information, I can be contacted at:

Any emails can be sent to the MSN address.

Thanks

Hello LadyUnicornEJG!

Would you like further clarification on what a bitterant is, or the effects of the substance in the human body?

Both, actually... I have seen a few places where people posted what it supposedly did, but not what I would necessarily consider accurate sources. I was originally asking about what it actually is, though.

It's really kind of sad how close to the top of a google search for "Bittergent technology" this comes now.

Bitterants, or bittering agents, are substances that, if added to other products/substances, make them unpalatable. The best known is denatonium benzoate, which is sometimes added to antifreeze or other household products.

Hello,

I was interested in this new technology warning I saw on the can myself.  As a kid me and my friends would get these every once in a while and inhale them to get a brief high.  I just got one today (I havent had one in about 4 years).

It had the warning label "bittergent technology" on the can...

Well,  out of curiosity I inhaled it....  I didnt notice any bad taste or anything different about it.  It was exactly as I remember from years ago when there was no deterent system in place other that the warning that it could be fatal.

Just figured someone may wanna know.

Jason-
If you saw "fatal" on the label and you knew there was a chance you could die from huffing the product, why would you still inhale it?

Further more do you know even if you don't die you are causing liver and kidney damage, hearing loss, limb spasms, bone marrow and central nervous system (including brain) damage?

Why would you do that to your body?

Mostly because im an idiot.  I have only done it about 4 times in my life with a few years in between and never noticed any side effect whatsoever (other then a nice quick buzz)..

I just posted in regaurds to the detterent "method" used.  bittergent I would assume that its supposed to be bitter and nasty tasting.

maybe it settles to the bottom of the can?  I didn't shake it up and never did before inhaling it.  I just think as a deterent its useless.

Interesting thoughts about what you posted.  Is there any hard facts or testing that has been done to prove what you posted?

Softwarechip,

As a mother of five, you strike me as being very angry and unhappy.  What are you hoping to achieve by posting comments like that?  You need to go to a trusted adult and get some help.  If you keep up huffing you will achieve your maybe 2 minutes of fame on your local news channel.  Trouble is, you won't be here to watch.  I am sorry that our son Justin can't respond to you.  He too thought he could experiment with huffing.  He died from a can of air freshener over 5 years ago.  He would be graduating from college this month if still here.  He dreamed of traveling the world.  Instead his ashes are now on all the continents.

Besides http://www.inhalant.org, some sources which claerly outline the irreversible effects of inhalant abuse are as follows:

National Institute of Drug Abuse: http://www.nida.nih.gov/ResearchReports/Inhalants/Inhalants3.html

American Association of Family Physicians: http://www.aafp.org/afp/20030901/869.html

Partnership for a Drug-Free America: http://www.drugfree.org/Portal/drug_guide/Inhalants

Again, these are just a few sources.  Anyone else who is interested should do some research and post more sources for others to see, or contact me and I will give a more extensive list.

This is serious stuff, and help is available if you want it.

To the lady who commented about her son that died from inhaling air freshner...I am so sorry for your loss but you have really caught my attention and I need some answers with hopes that the more parents can learn, the better they can be aware of what their children or other children may be doing to their bodies.  Can you please tell me the different ways that air fresheners can be huffed?  I caught my daughters friend with a can of bathroom air freshner outside my house just spraying it in the air.  Later that evening some crazy stuff started happening.  I am so oblivious to this type of stuff that I didn't even consider the fact that she may have been "huffing".  Any insite would be so helpful.

Dude I was just playin with some of the stuff, sprayin the can upside down and watching it evaporate, and I noticed water was condensing onto the surface, so I made a little puddle. Then I decided that I was tired so I wiped the desk off with my hand, then went to go brush my teeth. In the process I cupped my hands for a mouthful of water to swish with and when I put the water in my mouth, it was a horribly chemically bitter taste. I think that's what the bittergent stuff does. Doesn't seem like it would be much of an inhalant detterent though, but if you try to eat the stuff, besides being freezing cold, I'm pretty sure it would make you puke.

Yeah I love compressed air cans.  Never inhaled the stuff, not into that sort of thing but I use them a lot with my computers and whatnot.  Usually I buy three or four cans at a time when Im dusting the insides of my Box.  But like said earlier They do also provide a great deal of fun if you turn the can upside down and the frothy frozen liquid sprays out.  Its really fun to spray on your carpet, walls, computer screens (CRT monitor only), and anything else that isnt ALIVE.  This stuff is really fun and entertaining.  However this new bittergent stuff makes dusting a pain.  If you touch the spot you sprayed with the liquid you'll definitley taste the really nasty chemical.  However its a pain when you dust.  I was inside my computer dusting with three cans at once, as you know that after prolonged use the can becomes icy cold and loses pressure till it warms back up so you need multiple cans for a large dusting job.  Well i was inside my computer for about 2 hours just getting all the nitty gritty dust out and just from the air itself blowing back off the computer over my arms the bitter stuff got all over me.  This stuff is nasty and it is hard as heck to wash off.  It leaves a residue even after soaping and washing.  Crazy and annoying.  Thanks to immature children and even adults companies have to make the rest of us suffer for using the product in the correct manner.  What a pain.

First off- I am NOT a huffer. That's the most retarded thing one could ever do to themselves. Youtube  Intervention Huffer and watch Alison's story. It's both awful and hilarious at the same time. She should have died. Not that I wished death upon her-I'd never do that to anyone but she was killing herself. Horrible. Just for this cleaner that only pushes dirt and debris further into your keyboard/laptop she was so hot for it she became a whore to get cash for this stuff.

Topic: BITTERGENT: I'll tell you about it as last night I cam accross it for the first time ever on accident. My husband was using it to clean a fan. And I grabbed the can to put it away and unknowingly got it on my index finger. Later I scratched my lip. That stuff tastes so awful!!! And not any amount of toothpaste, eating, water, soap-nothing can get that taste out of your mouth or off of your lips.

I have NO idea what it's made of. My husband is a chemist and can't figure the stuff out. He said it may be  ethylene tri-ethylene, or tri-ethylene glycol. But he's not 100% sure. Whatever it is it's nasty stuff.

And this will not deter any huffer btw.

I agree with you, montague. The can my fiance', Jarod was using to get high had a bitterant in it, but yet he was obviously very addicted to this stuff and couldn't stop and it killed him. Adding bitterants won't stop someone who is addicted from inhaling products. They just want the high.
