This afternoon I noticed two 6th grader girls passing a bottle of hand sanitizer back and forth and breathing into their cupped hands.  (It was dark for a movie, there was a substitute and the class was active!)  After class it donned on me that they were "huffing" the hand sanitizer.  I've talked to the principal, but since it was the end of the day, the matter won't be addressed till tomorrow.  All of the information I've found talks about the dangers of drinking hand sanitizer, not really inhaling it.

Is there information out there about inhaling hand sanitizer?

I'm not really sure if there is information, but hand sanitizer is kind of what got me addicted to huffing rubbing alcohol.  I used to sniff it before I needed something stronger.

Thank you for sharing that information.  It's become a new "thing" at our middle school with 6th graders.  The small group I caught received 3-1/2 days of in-school suspension and counseling.  Unless you are aware of what you're looking at, students can inhale it in class -- almost right under the teacher's nose--pun intended.  Very scary.

it's good you guys did something about it.  i used to do it in class all the time; the teachers never realized.  that's kind of a weird fad, haha.  maybe they like it because it makes their nose burn?

Unfortunately, they got the "idea" while watching a video in Health class.  They were working a unit on drugs and watched a video where teenagers say they started harder drugs after they started out inhaling hand sanitizer.  The video immediately went on to say that inhaling kills brain cells that do not regenerate themselves--when they're gone, they're gone.

But, all the 6th graders listened to was the information on inhaling hand sanitizer.  They did say that it was a weird feeling with a burning sensation in your nose and throat and then a few seconds of feeling dizzy.

It's just alcohol.  Can it really get you that high?  That's kind of hard to believe.  As far as I know, it doesn't contain any other drugs.  And it will kill just as many brain cells as any other alcohol.  But at the doses here, is it really possible to cause tolerance, intoxication, addiction, and damage?  I'd be amazed.  Anyway, if it does work, I would say it is less harmful than other inhalants?  Alcohol vaporizers typically take 20 minutes of inhalation to deliver the equivalent of 1 shot of liquor.  I assume they do not put toxic chemicals (except perhaps when ingested) in hand sanitizer.  I enjoy sniffing it, as I enjoy the smell of alcohol, but I never have gotten a buzz...

They were for sure curious. At the beggining you dont even think that it could become an addiction and that can lead to use of stronger substances.Anyway you helped them more than you will ever think.

paulsomething1 - Thank you for posting.  Please realize though that rubbing alcohol is *not* supposed to be inhaled regardless of whether or not one gets a high from it.

This site by the U.S. Department of Labor has more information about the dangers of the inhalation of rubbing alcohol - Material Safety Data Sheet:  http://www.prochemonline.com/upload/MSDS/55460.Isopropyl%20Alcohol.pdf and can scroll down to where it says "Inhalation" or such.

With regard to enjoying the smell of rubbing alcohol, please talk to your family doctor about it since there are some who have a craving for non-food items perhaps due to an iron deficiency (anemia).  Please, however, do NOT start taking iron supplements until after the doctor sends you for some blood work as too much iron in the blood can result in liver (the largest internal organ) or kidney damage.

I used to sniff that until I needed something stronger. I've researched it before and apparently the only hand sanitizer thats actually harmful is [deleted as product names are not allowed on message board]. That's just what I read on the internet though

Katie - Thank you for posting though please do *not* get a false sense of security by huffing one hand sanitizer over another.  There is NO safe type of inhalant.

Please also take a look at the link that I'd posted.  Hoping that you stay smart and make good, healthy choices in life.

First of all, sorry for ressing an old thread

I found this thread researching the inhalation abuse of hand sanitizer. I just wanted to pop in and contribute a some things:

1. The most popular hand sanitizer on the market, at least where I live, has ethanol as the primary ingredient and not isopropyl. Ethanol is the same type of alcohol adults can use legally, and is sold in inhalant form.
2. The ethanol MSDS has the same exact inhalation warnings as isopropyl alcohol.

I'm not trying to condone the inhalation or use of any type of alcohol by minors, just wanted to offer a more complete view.
