Hello Fellow fans!!

I'm SOOOOO glad that I researched "addicted to sniffing Pine Sol" and found this message board!  After reading all 105 posts....I feel FREED!  Although, what we are doing can be dangerous, I'm happy to know I am not alone, I was beginning to think I had lost my mind and was embarrassed to tell anyone about it.

My sniffing addiction goes back at least 18 years.  I even took a bottle with me on a 7 day cruise because I was so addicted.  I was craving pretzels, crushed ice and Pine Sol.  I was just like many of you, swirling, spraying, sniffing it as much as I could.

My son once stayed overnight at a friends house and told the friend's mother that their house was not clean because it didn't smell like pine sol.....that's just how much I used it! It was so satisfying to rub it on my hands and I often craved it to the point of wanting to ingest it...Thank God I never did!

In 2006 I was diagnosed with severe anemia (my levels were at 3.0 when they should have been between 10-13). I ended up receiving 2 pints of blood.  After that transfusion I was REPULSED by the smell, hated the taste of pretzels and didn't want ice.

I had been free for last 5 years, but in March 2011, I bought a bottle and started sniffing again....1-3 times a day.  Since 1 Jun 2011, I've eaten about 10 - 1lb bags of pretzels @ 16 servings per bag....that's ALOT of carbs!  I haven't had the craving for ice yet but I'm certain that this is a sign that my iron is low.  Having it checked this week......Keep you posted.

I have been sniffing pine cleaner since 1999 literally.  I have always had to have it in my home.  I was in denial when my mother told me that I was addicted.  Then it had gotten so bad that my mom started calling me "pinny" because she said everytime she came over or when I got into her car I smelled just like pine cleaner.  Even my kids started smelling like it because I had to use it all day everyday.  I would crack the windows in the house to protect the kids from the smell, but since I was airring out the house, I would sniff the towels and the bottle while cleaning.  I even put it without water in a spray bottle and just walk through the house spraying the carpets and wiping down the walls just so I can smell it.  I hope it is not harming my body, but I know it probably is, but I just can't help myself.  I love the smell of orginal scent pine cleaner.  I CAN TRULY SAY I AM ADDICTED. I think I am going to get some help.

peterpan0205 - Thank you so much for sharing your struggles with inhalant use.  Please know that NO type of inhalant is safer than the next.  Inhaling pine cleaner or any chemical vapor IS doing damage to your body including possibly the children being exposed every day or even occasionally.  I'm glad that you've decided to get outside professional help.  My friend has a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from huffing at the age of 12, now in her 30s.  Please literally "quit while you're ahead" as they say.

Leah324 - Thank you for posting.  Please do talk to your doctor about the low iron, or anemia, since there are people with anemia who apparently do have cravings for products used for huffing.  Please, however, ONLY take iron supplements per your doctor's request as too much iron in the blood may cause liver (the largest internal organ) and/or kidney damage.  Please make an appointment with your doctor without delay.

A word to the wise that even diluted chemical vapors are VERY risky so please seek outside professional help and talk to a certified addiction counselor.  This site has a search for certified addiction specialists:  http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/ and can click one's state of residence on the map and continue with the search.

That's the insanity of addiction and alcoholism.  We know what we're doing is killing us.  There's medical proof of the consequences.  But, we do it anyway.

Rationalization is a good defense mechanism.  False hope is what gets you in the end.  Acceptance is the key.  Once you know you're not alone, and you can accept the fact that you can NEVER own pine cleaner again, it gets easier.

For me, when I can, thinking it through helps.  When you have urges, start thinking of the consequences and be brutally honest with yourself.  Your kids notice and their friends notice and children are curious creatures.  Your Mom is so aware of it, and she's their grandmother.  Children will draw conclusions on their own when they know it's taboo to talk about.

Good luck, try an NA meeting, it's a good first step.  You don't have to say anything, just go and sit and listen and leave.  If you find the need to go again, or the curiosity, then go.  Know that you are not alone AND that you cannot beat these kinds of things alone.

peterpan0205 - Perhaps you can ask the doctor about iron supplements in capsule form which may be easier on the digestive system.  I wonder if you can take a stool softener (NOT a laxative which may be too harsh) to help with the constipation, too.  With regard to the anemia, perhaps the craving for those individuals stems from the mineral deficiency and one's system not working properly.  Please talk with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements though (or with any other questions).  Perhaps you can ask the local pharmacist as well.

I have the same problem,  I love the smell of pine cleaner but i've always had a thing about smells,  I also love gasoline and lighter fluid, and when i worked at a dry cleaner i loved the smell of the stain chemicals.  But its only been a year since i cant stop sniffing pine cleaner, I have a spray bottle next to my bed and one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen,  I cant NOT have it in my house,  my relatives dont understand.
I've always used pine cleaner to wash my floor but its been the past year that i cant stop sniffing it.

rkwooodw - Thank you for posting.  Please take the next step and seek outside professional help as most people with an addiction are unable to stop themselves.  It's also advisable to look into a support group such as the 12-step Narcotics Anonymous and/or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.  Field experts have said that those who have an addiction and quit themselves are referred to as a "dry drunk" since they haven't dealt with what may have led them to self-medicate in the first place.  Their behavior is still that of an "addict" but just not using.  Please decide to get professional counseling and/or attend a support group for those in recovery.

mylean - Thank you for posting, too.  Please know that sniffing clorox (bleach) or pinesol by themselves is deadly and destructive much less together!  Please do take a look at the following websites for some resources for those with an addiction.

This site may have a listing of some local counseling and treatment programs for those with addiction, and some may have state and/or county funding for those without health insurance:  http://findtreatment.samhsa.gov and can click one's state of residence on the map and continue with the search.

Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and one may attend an "open" meeting if doesn't have a drinking problem:  http://www.aa.org

mylean - You're quite welcome.  The dangers of huffing even increase when mixing two different chemicals.  Please do make an appointment with a certified addictions counselor, and please let us know how you're doing.

I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SNIFFING THINGS ALSO, AND PINE CLEANER IS DEFINATELY ONE OF THEM! I THINK I STARTED SNIFFING ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. AND I DO EVERY SINGLE DAY LIKE 4 OR 5 TIMES A DAY. ITS TO THE POINT NOW WHERE I WOULD POUR A CAP FULL INTO SOME TISSUE, AND JUST PUT IT UP TO MY NOSE AND SNIFF. THE OTHER DAY MY HEAD WAS HURTING PRETTY BAD WHEN I WOULD LAUGH, AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I GOT REAL DIZZY AND MY HEAD WAS SPINNING. DOES THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME SNIFFING PINE CLEANER? I READ THE BACK LABEL AND IT DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING ON THERE THAT SAYS DELIBERATELY CONCENTRATING AND INHALING CONTENTS CAN BE HARMFUL OR FATAL. SO I ENJOY SNIFFING EVERYDAY
