hattygram- I think it is important to take heed to smartkid's message above.  Make sure to be vigilant (monitor his activities, friends to the best of your abilities).

It is also important to have an open line of communication with your grandson. Surprisingly, I've heard stories of kids being more likely to tell their grandparents what is going on in their lives than their parents, for fear they would get in trouble.

Ask him if he knows about inhalant abuse, not just what it is, but the effects on the body.  Also, ask if he knows of other kids abusing products.  Because he is at an awkward age, you may want to reinforce lessons on how to stand up to peer pressure.

I hope this helps initially.  Are there any grandparents/parents/guardians who can offer their first- hand advice or experiences when talking to a child about inhalant abuse?
