I am addicted to sniffing 91 percent rubbing alcohol...now whenever I try to smell the 70 percent I can't smell it so I had to move to a higher concentration. I am severly anemic, which I am thinking this is the culprit of my addiction. I sniff the alcohol fumes for hours. I am so scared that I am severly damaging my brain. This has been going on since I was a little girl...do you all have any advice for my addiction. I have tired to quit but I always go right back I can go through a bottle of rubbing alcohol in less than a week.

rubbing alcohol is a drying agent. When you sniff the fumes, they enter the nose, mouth, and back of the throat and may enter the lungs drying out the mucus membranes. Over time and continued use, some destruction of the membranes may occur in all these areas, including the lungs. Once destruction of the lungs and accompaning bronchus have occured, it may never recover leaving you with some very severe upper respiratory disease. See a doctor or check out rehab for this addiction before you compromise your life any more than you have.

OMG!!!! I thought I was the only one!!! WTF! I go through at least a bottle a week. Not the little bottle either the big honker bottle. What is it? I get these cravings in the middle of the day or night! Where I have to get up and get a few cotton balls, unroll them and soak them with 91% rubbing alcohol then sniff till they're dry. My friends and family think I'm nuts! My OBGYN told me it might be that I was Anemic. He ran some test and did find I was anemic. I'm so bad I keep a baggie of cotton balls soaked in alcohol in my car, desk at work and, work out bag! I don't understand it! I just don't.

alcoholaddicted- How are you doing?

alsoalcoholaddicted- You're not anemic, but did your doctor give you any other reasons why you may be doing this? Did he provide any resources on where to go to get help for this problem? Anything you can share on the board to help others with this problem?

I am in the medical field and I got started while working and washing my hands with an alcohol base substance. it was five years ago. It got worse after my divorce. I have tried to quit several times. When i did sniff, i was often out of breath. I could not climb a foot of stairs. My back of my throat was dry, people could smell it in my car, and I would have to lie about the smell. My family says that when I would ride in the car with them, they could smell it. I told them I was rubbing it on my back, knees and fingers for arthritis, which was a lie. I hated to lie to them. i am going through withdral and it not painful, I just want it when I drive, I want it when I wake up, and I want it when I am not preocupied with something else. I also want it to be out of my system. I have no bottles in the house, but I feel that the urge will return, so what do I do? I dont want my new boyfriend toknow about this addiction, so how to stop completely is draining me badly since the urge is so desirable.

tcrickett- Thanks for your post. As you are in the medical field, have you talked to any of your peers about this problem? Have you done some research on addiction treatment programs/facilities/resources in your area?

Extreme inhalant addiction, usually called huffing, is the determined inhalation of substance vapors to attain a distorted psychological or physical condition, which for most abusers is a euphoric result. Abusers breathe in fumes emitted from a broad variety of substances. In fact, chemical vapors used as inhalants can be found in many ordinary domestic products. There are a number of general categories for substances that may be used as inhalants.

Treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction that is based on the 12 Step drug treatment, It can provide adolescents with a life-long program by which to maintain their sobriety and achieve a balanced and healthy emotional and spiritual life. The fellowship of these programs help fight the tendency toward isolation, and keeps teenagers away from people, places, and things that might lead to relapse.

There is no way to stop compleatly. you will be battiling this for the rest of your life as will I and everyone on this board. If you tell your boyfriend he will probably help you stay away from it-and if he dosnt maybe you should re consider going out with him? JMPO -Rachel (an inhalints abuser for 3 of my 15 years of life) I will post more later I need to go. good luck! my email is all wise open.

Like others, I thought I was the only one with this addiction. I just searched today to see if others had it and was amazed to find out the amount. I can go through the big bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol in a week also. I wanted to try the 91% but was too scared. Now I'm glad I didn't because I've read a lot recently on the damage it can cause to the brain and nervous system. The hard part, though, is quiting. My boyfriend has tried to get me to stop for the longest, but I can't. The longest I've gone is about 1 week. Just like a previous response, I can't walk up a flight of stairs without getting really out of breath either and I'm in good shape. If anyone wants to talk about it instant message me at yahoo: lovelyforever220

unexpectedaddict- Please reach out to your doctor, parents, friends about this issue. Moral support will be important as you go down the path of beating your addiction.

Obviously, your boyfriend is very concerned about you and wants you to get help. If he's "tried to get you to stop for the longest" he believes in you and knows that you can kick the habit, you've just got to believe in yourself!

Best of luck, and please keep us posted on your progress.
