Hey,

I am a high school teacher worried about one of my students.  He exhibits the classic slacker signs of drug abuse, and I figured he was smoking weed, but lately I've noticed a STRONG smell around him, kind of like the adhesive part of band-aids, although it could be like a marker or something.  The research I've done says to look for a chemical smell on the breath, but this kid just reeks of it when he walks by.  That's not his breath, it's like he took a bath in it!  Any clue?  Thanks!

MSL- Have you noticed any spots/stains on his clothes? Sometimes users may dip a piece of clothing in a substance.

Have you asked a school nurse?

Hey,

No, I haven't, I'll have to look for that.  I did ask the nurse and his guidance counselor.  She said he is asthmatic so she doubts he's huffing, but I know he smokes, so that is no answer...it's weird, his books smell like it too, even though one was in the open air for a week.  I read on here that sometimes they put their heads in bags to concentrate the smell....could they do that with a nylon bookbag?

Good question.  Nylon is not as absorbent as other fabrics, as it is usually pretty porous- it can also be dissolved with strong solvents. So it is possible that he could be using his bookbag, but not likely.

Have other faculty/staff noticed or questioned the student's smell?  Has anyone contacted his parents?

Insulin smells like Band-Aids. Lyme disease? Diabetes?

Maybe he has any spots on the skin or on the clothing itself. It may cost you to call his parents, but it is only you who have eaten are sure that he is using drugs.
